This week on The Digital Story Photography Podcast: "Cuba Movies and eBook, T-Shirt Giveaway, White House Lifts Photo Ban - all of this and more on today's show with Derrick Story.

Weekly Update - "Instagram stores higher resolution images". DP Connect reports: "After its recent app update it seems Instagram has further improvements up its sleeve, as the mobile image sharing platform has started storing higher resolution images on its servers. In the app and on the web interface, as before, images are still displayed at the small 640 x 640 pixel size, but a look at the website source code reveals that images are now actually stored at 1080 x 1080 pixels."

In other news... "White House lifts 40-year ban on photography during public tours" Imaging-Resource reports: "40 years ago, the White House put a ban on photography during public tours. Now, the ban has been lifted, with First Lady Michelle Obama posting a video on Instagram announcing the White House will once again allow photography during public tours."
"Although the ban has been lifted" there are still limitations on what imagery you can capture. Specifically, you're not able to use video cameras, interchangeable lens cameras, tripods, selfie sticks or flash. Smartphones and compact cameras with a lens no longer than 3 inches (stills only) are permitted on the public tour route as long as their use does not interfere with other guests' enjoyment of the tour.

If my photo assignment is supposed to start Saturday afternoon, then I'm usually there Friday night. If I don't like the way a picture looks when covering an event, I politely ask people to move until the composition is attractive. This week I take you behind the scenes on how I approach event photography. I use a recent assignment, the Wine Country Big Q, as an example of how I make sure I come away with client-happy shots.

Can you tell a story with just one photograph? Yes, indeed. In this week's podcast, I talk about narrative - using your skills and creativity to compose an image that stimulates the viewer's imagination, tells a story. By way of example, I talk about the work of fine art photographer, Lise Sarfati, who I think does an excellent job of creating narrative in her photographs. This is a different form of photographic expression, much less technical than HDR, more controlling that street photography. See what you think after listening to this week's show.

halloween_pumpkins.jpg

Halloween can be a frightful experience with a compact camera. How do you get good shots under the most difficult photography conditions?

Your best friend, regardless of the camera you're using, is a setting called Nighttime Portrait or Party. You'll find one or both of these in your Scene modes. They are perfect for evening Halloween shoots, whether you're outside trick or treating, or inside at a spooky gathering.

In this podcast I tackle Halloween shooting and provide tips for every type of camera, from simple compact to DSLR.

Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) promises better speed and stability. For the most part, I think Apple has delivered the goods. But I also sense that expectations might be a little high for this evolutionary release of the Mac operating system. In this podcast, I discuss my clean install of Snow Leopard from a photographer's point of view.

You might also want to take a look at my brief article, Snow Leopard Notes for Photographers. Other tidbits include Nikon's compatibility report for Capture NX2 users and HP's driver instructions for 10.6 users.

Monthly Photo Assignment

Simple is the Sept. 2009 Photo Assignment. My original thought was the power that comes from a simple composition, with as few elements as possible. But you might find another twist on this month's theme. You can read more about how to submit on our Member Participation page. Deadline for entry is Sept. 30, 2009.

Canon 30D

There are two types of digital camera disasters: those we bring upon ourselves and those of which we have no control. In this podcast I talk about both.

One of the pitfalls that I warn to stay away from is canned air, and I recommend to use blower bulbs instead. My favorite is the Giottos Rocket Air Blaster. But even with the Rocket, be sure to use it with care since you're inside your digital SLR where all the sensitive components reside.

I also find Ziploc bags very useful for protecting my cameras from humidity and condensation. Always have one with you that's large enough to contain your camera and lens.

Finally, keep an eye out for firmware updates for your camera. Sometimes they add new features to your model, but often they fix problems and are well worth the effort of installing.

Listen to the Podcast

Now that I've piqued your curiosity, it's time to listen to today's audio show titled, "Camera Mayhem - Self-Inflicted and Otherwise." You can download the podcast here (30 minutes).
