"Top Ten $100 Photo Accessories" - Digital Photography Podcast 100

camera_tile.jpg

To celebrate our 100th podcast, I'm sharing my list of Top 10 Photo Accessories for $100 or Less. I present them "David Letterman" style, starting with #10 and working my way up the list to my favorite photo goodie for $100. Oh the suspense as I inch my way up the list. No clues in the show notes. No links. Nothing. You have to listen to this podcast to find out my 10 favorites.

I will mention one thing here that I cover in the podcast... that's my gratitude to you, the TDS member, for sharing your work, your enthusiasm, and your passion for great photography. You are the one who powered us to #100, and we're going to keep going forward. Also a special thanks to Scott Sheppard of Inside Digital Photo. Scott has taken every one of these 100 shows under his wing, and added his secret sauce to help me deliver the best product possible.

Monthly Photo Assignment

Duotone is this month's photo assignment. This will be a fun gallery that lets us explore new ways to tone B&W images. You can read more about how to submit on our Submissions page. Deadline for entry is Sept. 30.

I can't believe it's 100 Digital Story podcasts already! Congratulations! I've been there since the beginning - I think I first heard about your podcast on the Inside Mac Radio podcast. If I remember correctly, Scott interviewed you to debut your podcast.

Anyway, it is by far my favorite podcast. Your topics are interesting, relevant, and inspiring and your delivery truly encourages the sense of community that you like. And don't worry about the production quality of those first few podcasts (I do remember those); the slickest production means nothing if you don't have good content, and good content stands on its own without any gloss.

Keep up the great work!

Thanks Tony for your comment :) I've received some mail too around #100 with some fun reader anecdotes. I'll probably read some of that mail on the next show. So if you have a comment, either post it here like Tony did, or send it along via email.

I agree totally with your #2 and #1 picks. I got a used 50mm f/1.7 lens at Adolph Gasser in San Francisco and it has been a great lens, not only for low light shooting but also for shots where you need a really short depth of field. A polarizer is a necessity because, among other things, it is something than cannot be duplicated in post processing. For people who have lots of lenses of varying diamater (like me) I would suggest the Cokin system. I've used them for years, my first two filters were an 80A and a linear polarizer for my K1000, and I have been very happy with them. The mounting rings are about $10 apiece and that means I can use all my filters on all my lenses.

I really agree with the 1# choice. A fast prime of less than f2 is necessary.

Congratulations on the 100th episode! It marked a milestone for me also as I only started listening about four weeks ago and have been playing catch up since then. I went right back to the start and the 100th episode marked my catching up! Now I have to wait a whole week for the next episode!

I've learned so much from listening to TDS and have been recommending it to other shooters that I meet in Luxembourg. I wonder if any of it will rub off on my 3-year old daughter; I've been listening as I drive her to and from the crèche every day. She helped me take some shots today of her stickle-brick creation so maybe it's rubbing off already!

Nice to hear what was at #1 as I bought that very lens a couple of weeks ago (after you recommended it on a previous episode.) I got the Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 D, but it cost a bit more than $100 dollars (probably over $150 at today's exchange rate actually). It was still worth it though.

I can see that you are an expert at your field! I am launching a website soon, and your information will be very useful for me.. Thanks for all your help and wishing you all the success in your business.
