Canon announced that their zoomerific PowerShot SX1 IS will be Raw enabled this spring. They will release a firmware update that will unlock this capability giving shooters the added benefit of Raw capture on this compact camera. By doing so, Canon has provided a nice alternative for those who want the 28mm to 560mm zooming range of the SX1, but aren't interested in lugging around a DSLR and telephoto lens.
The Canon SX1 has many interesting features for the photographer on the go. It uses AA batteries that are easy to find anywhere in the world. It can record HD video (1920 x 1080) and high resolution Raw (3648 x 2736), and it accepts a Mini-HDMI to HDMI cable so you can plug it directly into an HD television for movie or slideshow playback. (You can read a good review of this camera on photographyBLOG).
If you want to shoot 10 megapixel Raw on a compact camera with a powerful zoom and HD video capture, then take a look at the Canon PowerShot SX1 IS. You should be able to download the Raw firmware update next month.

Mmmh, so Canon finally does the same as these guys: http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page
Derrick, I think there's some confusion here.
You're saying SX1 and linking to the SX1 page on Canon's site, but the Amazon page and price are for the SX10.
The SX1 has just been announced, whereas it's the SX10 that's getting the firmware upgrade.
And the SX1 does HD video, but currently the SX10 does not. You might have mixed these up, amigo...
Hi Colin, actually, the only confusion was the Amazon link, which I took out.
Everything that I've read indicates that it is the SX1 that will be Raw enabled (DP Review, PhotographyBLOG, etc.), not any other Canon compact models (other than the existing G9 and G10).
My understanding is that the SX1 is the camera getting a firmware update. It has been around, just not in the US. I haven't read anything about the SX10 getting any kind of update.
So as far as I know, the story reads correct.
Thanks for your comment and catching the bad link :)
Hi IllOgical.42, your point is well taken, which is, Raw capability is already built into many of these compacts. It just has to be unlocked. So it's really a sales and marketing decision, not so much a technology one.
That being said, I hope the SX1 represents a trend in unlocking by the manufacturer.
Okay, my mistake on the other. Sorry! There were so many postings comparing the SX1 with the SX10, and some mistaken forum comments about the SX10 getting RAW, that I conflated them.
Hi Colin, If you take the best from both of us, I think we got it right :) Thanks again, -Derrick
Excellent read, I just passed this onto a colleague who was doing a little research on that. And he actually bought me lunch because I found it for him smile So let me rephrase that: Thanks for lunch!
