I was up on the second floor talking with a senior clerk in Housewares who had just found out she was going to lose her job. This was the first week of liquidation at the Gottschalks department store in Santa Rosa, Ca. She had worked for the company for more than 5 years.
"How are you doing?" I asked.
"Mostly, I'm just mad." she replied. "I just hate seeing this happen here. And I don't want to lose my job."
She said this as she kindly helped me with a small purchase during our conversation.
By way of background, I learned that: "Gottschalks, founded in Fresno in 1904, operated 58 department stores and three specialty stores, including locations in Santa Cruz and Watsonville. It had about 5,200 employees in California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Idaho and Nevada," wrote Tim Sheehan of The Fresno Bee. "Gottschalks filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in mid-January in hopes of either reorganizing its debt or finding a buyer." But unfortunately neither plan worked and they had to turn over their business to a liquidator.
The sequence for closing a large retail store this way is predictable, almost mathematical. First, the liquidator moves in and takes over the operation. Initially, they may actually raise the prices. For example, while I was in Gottschalks, I overheard one customer commenting, "I was here last week and this set of dishes was on sale for 40 percent off. Now they're only 20 percent discounted." This also happened with a Circuit City store closing (as reported by Ira Glass in This American Life). The liquidators raised prices at the beginning of the closing to get as much money as possible, then slowly deepened the discounts as inventory dwindled.
Even though the signs outside tempt shoppers with savings up to 60 percent, they most likely won't see that level of discounting for weeks. Meanwhile, inside on the second floor in Housewares, I feel the eerie sensation of death. I know that soon everything I see here will be gone. Out of the corner of my eye I notice another clerk who had given me a great deal on a major purchase months back. I had this fleeting thought that maybe I had taken advantage of him, and now he was certain to lose his job.
"These are good people," blurted the woman who was helping me at the counter. "I've really enjoyed working for this company." She then carefully finished wrapping my purchase and wished me a good day. "Best of luck," I said, and took the escalator back down to the first floor, knowing this will be my last visit to Gottschalks of Santa Rosa.

Very hard to read, but everything seems headed that way these days.
I took a job one year ago at the corp office and the smell of death was already there. I left one month later leaving a list of some of the reasons it was not going to make it unless certain things changed fast. Those things never did. I'm sorry to see a great place like this die and so many good people loose their jobs. Truly sad and totally preventable.

To commercialize in conditions of quality rather than monetary value, and in order to specialise consequently, you want to follow the standard format of the 4 Ps marketing plan. That is, Price, Product, Place and Promotion obviously you cognize the bad properties of the merchandise, and the cost, but for place you should remember about the type of people who are willing to pay over 4x price of competing production whereas the cheap option may be sold where accent is on cost, your ware will be suited to places/distributors where the customers will be willing to pay for high-performance. I believe drivetime is a corrupt business. in 2007 I bought a 2005 kia rio from drivetime. It was my first car and I knew little about buying cars. I am the first person in my family to ever have a license or own a car. Drivetime charged me over $23, 000 for a used kia when a new one is only 16, 000. On top of that, when I fell behind on my payments the called and offered me a payment plan in which they'd push the payment i was behind on back to the tail end of my contract pending I make a minimum payment on my debt. Its around this time that my mother dies due to heart problems. Somehow I managed sell everything I could to get enough money to pay drivetime what I owed them and tae care of my mother's arrangements. But, drivetime then told me that I was no longer eligible for the deferment and I remain behind to this day. My phone ring several time a day and I dont even want tot talk to those people because they lied to me about what theyd do while I used money that could have went to a memorial service for my mom on their lies.
Drivetime should go to hell. I deeply believe that these people have con'd me better than anyone in my entire life. I have paid them well over 20, 000 for a used kia and they still hound me every hour on the hour know damn well I have paid for the value of the car several times over. I fully agree with this cause and believe drivetime should be sued for corrupt business practices.
If you live in London, you can spend every day/evening attending events, meeting fellow "Silicon Roundabout" startups and if you are very lucky, you might even bump into a fabled VC or London's very own "Super" Angel.
